Tribe Lax Defeats Elon, 11-9, on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 30, 2016)—The William & Mary lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with an exciting 11-9 victory against Elon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
W&M (7-9, 1-5) held Elon (10-6, 3-3) scoreless for a stretch of more than 30 minutes en route to building a five-goal lead and then held off a late charge by the Phoenix to secure the league win.
 
The Tribe utilized a balanced attack, as eight players combined to score the team's 11 goals. Sophomore McKinley Wade led the squad with four goals, while senior Zoe Boger (1g, 1a) and freshman Maddie Torgerson (1g, 1a) provided two points apiece.
 
Boger and junior Lindsey Jenks also added three draw controls apiece, while junior Abby Junior totaled three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
 
Senior goalie Meredith Crizer came up big with nine saves, highlighted by a pair of stops in the closing minutes that helped preserve the triumph.
 
The College dominated the draws (14-8), which include a 10-2 advantage in the first half, while Elon owned a 19-16 edge in ground balls.
 
Although Elon got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Anna Vitton at 27:50, W&M answered with three consecutive goals – coming by Boger (24:48), Wade (20:08) and freshman Eloise Gagnon (19:26) – to take an early 3-1 lead.
 
While the Phoenix countered with a pair of scores to knot the count at 3-3, the Tribe held EU scoreless for the final 17:42 of the opening half and closed the initial stanza with a 5-0 run in the final 6:33.Wade scored twice during the pivotal stretch (6:33, 2:24), while freshman Holly Hager (4:46), senior Kelly Martins (2:24) and Jenks (0:06) also found the back of the cage.
 
It was a defensive struggle to begin the second half, as Elon got on the board first when Shelby Scanlin scored with 17:28 showing. Although Elon added three more unanswered goals to narrow the margin to 8-7 with 14:52 remaining, W&M responded with a 3-0 run to go ahead, 11-7, with less than five minutes left.
 
While a pair of goals by Maeve Cowley (4:42, 1:48) closed the gap, Crizer came up big with two saves in the final minutes to help secure the narrow victory.
