Women's Tennis Cruises to CAA Semifinals, Roars over Pride, 4-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The top seed William & Mary women's tennis team dominated its Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinal on Friday afternoon, bouncing No. 8 seed Hofstra, 4-0, at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. With inclement weather in North Carolina, the match was forced indoors and pushed back two hours. W&M, which is ranked No. 36 nationally, ran its regular-season ledger to 16-6, marking the third time in four seasons under head coach Tyler Thomson that W&M won at least 16 matches. Hofstra ended the season at 14-7, its most wins since 2008.

With the quarterfinal moving indoors, the match began with the top four singles positions, and the Tribe took a commanding early lead. Two-time CAA Player of the Year Elizaveta Nemchinov dropped only two games in topping Sarah Bowen, 6-1, 6-1, at the top singles post. The No. 108 nationally-ranked Tribe player won her third straight and fourth in the last five matches to improve to 19-8 on the year.

Freshman Lauren Goodman quickly followed her senior teammate with a similar 6-1, 6-1 win over her Pride counterpart, Sarah Herndon, at No. 3. The CAA Rookie of the Year extended her win streak to seven and improved to 17-6 overall with her 10th win at No. 3.

At the second singles spot, junior Marie Faure increased the margin to 3-0 by picking up her 15th win of the year. The All-CAA First Teamer upended Hofstra's wins leader Michal Kaplan, 6-2, 7-6, for her sixth win in the last seven matches. Faure is on a three-match win streak and picked up her 10th triumph at the No. 2 slot.

Senior Julia Casselbury recorded the clinching singles triumph for the fourth time this season and in the process, notched her 30th career singles win in a Tribe uniform. She upended Carmen Pestano, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 to secure W&M's semifinal berth. Casselbury improved to 15-11 on the year with her seventh win at the fourth position.

The Tribe continues its pursuit of a 24th CAA Championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. In a rematch of last season's title match, the Green and Gold faces No. 4 seed Charleston in the semifinals. The Cougars downed No. 5 UNCW, 4-0, in its CAA Quarterfinals. Both CAA women's semifinals will be played simultaneously at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.
