Offense Comes Alive as Baseball Evens Series at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The William and Mary baseball team's offense came alive and scored double-figure runs for the 13th time this season. W&M scored 11 runs on 15 hits en route to the 11-4 victory at James Madison on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 16-18, 5-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Dukes fall to 15-20, 5-6 in league action.

Sophomore Ryan Hall again led the offense with three hits and a RBI, while senior Charley Gould drove in three runs. Sophomore Cullen Large extended his hitting streak to a team-high 15-games, and all nine starters recorded a hit in the victory.

For the 11th time this season, W&M jumped on the board for a run in the top of the first inning. Hall started the inning by getting hit by pitch, before moving to second on a single by freshman Kyle Wrighte. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, before Gould sent a fly out to right field, but it was enough to score Hall for the RBI and the 1-0 lead.

James Madison tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Zach Tondi doubled into right centerfield, before Adam Sisk singled up the middle knotting the score 1-1. The Dukes continued to threaten and tried a double steal with runners on the corners. However, W&M sniffed out and recorded the final out at the plate, ending the frame.

The Tribe retook the lead with a run in the top of the third inning. With one out, Large tripled down the right field line setting the table for an RBI groundout by Gould.

W&M extended its lead with its 24th inning in which they scored four or more runs with six runs in the top of the fourth.  Junior Tim Hoehn led off the frame with a single to center field, moving to second on a single from senior Josh Smith.  After an out, Hall singled for the inning's first run. Large reached on a fielder's choice, but it was enough for the second run of the inning. The final three runs of the frame came with two outs on RBIs from freshman Hunter Smith and junior Charles Ameer, before an error allowed the final run to score, making the advantage 8-1.

JMU got a run back in the bottom fourth inning. A sacrifice fly from Tondi allowed for Kyle McPherson, who doubled, to score the run.

The Tribe added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Wrighte was hit by a pitch, before Large singled moving him to third. A single from Gould provided his third RBI of the contest. The rally continued as junior Ryder Miconi continued the hit parade with a single up the middle that cleared the bases.

James Madison again responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Logan Quimuyog tripled to lead off the inning. The next batter Tanner Dofflemyer flew out to center, cutting the lead to 11-3.

The Dukes added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that is how close they could cut it. Dofflemyer started the rally with a double to right center field with one out. The next batter, Ky Parrott singled through right side for the run.

Again, freshman Bodie Sheehan turned another strong start for the Green and Gold. He picked up his third win going eight innings with four runs, while he had three strikeouts. Junior John Yoest pitched a clean ninth inning to preserve the win.

Colton Harlow was saddled with the loss for the Dukes. He allowed six runs on eight hits. Tondi led the JMU offense with a pair of hits and a RBI.
