After her fourth win of the year, William & Mary senior
Alessandra Liu (Cynwyd, Pa.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Golfer of the Week for the fourth time this season. Liu is the final weekly winner of the 2015-16 campaign, which saw her four wins out-number every other school's total. She was one of only three players all year to be honored more than once (the other two were both two-time winners).
Competing at the River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C., Liu shot 217 (+1) to win by a stroke, closing the week with a 71 (-1) to overcome a two-stroke deficit heading into the final day. Her fourth win of the year put Liu into even-more rarified air than she already inhabited, making her just the third Tribe golfer ever to win four tournaments in a single year and just the fourth with at least five wins in her career. Only W&M Hall-of-Famers
Tracy Leinbach '81 (who won four in 1978-79) and
Mary Wilkinson '82 in the national championship season of 1980-81 have ever won four tournaments in a single season, and the pair (Leinbach eight, Wilkinson 11) along with
Anne Bierman '85 who won five times in her career rank in the same echelon as Liu. Those other three all earned All-American honors at least once in their careers. Heading into the CAA Championships, Liu is averaging a school-record 71.78 strokes per round, and is also atop the season record chart with a .987 head-to-head winning percentage (786-10). Her 16 rounds of par or better this season alone is more than the next two women on the career charts combined.
William & Mary competes at the CAA Championships this weekend, April 15-17, at St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C. The Tribe has never won either the individual or team title, which come with automatic bids to the NCAA Regionals.
