Baseball Falls in Nightcap at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego scored seven runs over the course of five straight innings defeating the William & Mary baseball team 7-3 in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday night in California. The game was the second of a doubleheader. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 6-6, while the Toreros improve to 6-7.
 
Junior Ryder Miconi and sophomore Ryan Hall led the Tribe offense in the game with a pair of hits. Senior Josh Smith also continued his impressive start to the season, extending his streak to 14-games, which dates back to the 2015 season.
 
The Tribe took advantage of two unearned runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman Kyle Wrighte reached on a one-out walk, moving to second on a stolen base. Josh Smith reached on an error by the left fielder, which allowed for Wrighte to score the game's first run. After an out, junior Cullen Large singled giving W&M a 2-0 lead.
 
San Diego got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jerrod Smith led off the inning with a double, moving to third on an infield single by Riley Adams. A groundout by Ryan Kirby allowed for Jerrod Smith to score, cutting the lead to 2-1.
 
W&M added a run in the top of the fifth inning thanks to the top of the lineup. Hall reached on a one-out single, moving to third on a double from Josh Smith.  A wild pitch allowed for Hall to score, giving the Green and Gold a 3-1 advantage.
 
USD cut into the lead again with another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Spencer Dunlap doubled to centerfield setting the table. Jeff Houghtby came up with a two-out single, making the score 3-2.
 
The Toreros took their first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs Bhret Bewley hit an infield single, who came aroun when Hunter Mercado-Hood traded places with him, tying the score. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, an error gave USD a 4-3 advantage.
 
San Diego tacked on two more runs this time with two-outs, extending its lead. Adams sparked the rally with a one-out double. Kirby and Mercado-Hood reached on a hit by pitch and walk sandwiched around an out. A two-out double by Troy Conyers gave the Toreros a 6-3 lead.
 
USD added an insurance run and scored for its fifth straight inning. A pair of walks put runners on first and second with two outs for Kirby, who singled into left field. The run made home team's advantage 7-3.
 
Freshman starting pitcher Bodie Sheehan turned his best and longest start of his young career, but was saddled with the hard luck loss. He went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, with two strikeouts.
 
Kirby and Conyers each had two RBIs for the Toreros offensively. Matthew Kirk picked up the win on the mound for USD. He tossed 1.2 innings, scattering two hits. The save was credited to Conyers, who pitched the final two innings, allowing a single.
 
The Green and Gold continue their tour of California with four games all in Northridge, Calif. The first of four games comes on Thursday, March 10 when the Tribe plays at Cal State Northridge. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. EST.
