Women's Basketball Opens CAA Tournament Versus Towson Wednesday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team opens CAA Tournament play as the No. 7-seed as they play the No. 10-seeded Towson Tigers on Wednesday, March 9 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The game, which will be streamed for live and for free on CAA.TV, is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start. The winner between the Tribe and Tigers advances to Thursday's quarterfinals against Drexel.

OPENING TIP
The William & Mary women's basketball team earned the No. 7 seed in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championship and will square off with the 10th-seeded Towson Tigers on Wednesday, March 9. Tipoff for the game is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
With a win this afternoon, the Tribe will advance to the quarterfinals and have a date with the No. 2-seeded Drexel Dragons tomorrow. Tipoff for that game is set for 5 p.m.
The Tribe meets Towson for the 27th time in series history on Wednesday afternoon in Upper Marlboro, Md.  The Tribe swept the regular season series, and the team's just met on Feb. 26, a 78-65 Tribe victory. W&M leads the all-time series by a 16-10 mark, and has won the last three games in the series. This will be the first-ever time that the Tribe and Tigers have met in the CAA Tournament.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Junior Marlena Tremba scored a game-high 25 points, but the William & Mary women's basketball team could not overcome a big third quarter from Elon, falling 74-64 in the regular season finale at Kaplan Arena on Wednesday night. Tremba finished the game shooting 6-of-13 from the floor, matched a season-high with five 3-pointers, and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. She added three assists, and a career-high seven steals.  Classmate Alexandra Masaquel added 19 points three rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. With her five 3-pointers, Tremba became just the third player in school history to hit more than 200 career 3-pointers. She is now in a tie for second place all-time with Jen Sobota '03 with 201 career triples. She is 104 treys away from breaking the all-time record held Janine Aldridge '13 with 304 3-pointers.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Towson enters the CAAA Tournament looking to snap a five-game losing streak. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 6-20, 3-15 CAA record.  Towson is averaging 62.2 points per game this season. Raven Bankston leads two Tigers in double figures with 15.4 points per game. Dominique Johnson is second on the team with 13.2 points per game, while Sianni Martin is third  on the team just outside of double-figures with 9.8 points a game. TU is bringing down 37.7 rebounds a night as a team. Daijah Thomas leads the team with 6.0 rebounds a night, while Brittany Tarr is second on the team with 4.7 rebounds. Niki Reid Geckeler is in her third season at Towson, posting a 30-61 record. She has posted a 115-153 record in her eight seasons as a head coach.

In the two regular season games, each won by the Tribe, junior Alexandra Masaquel led the Green and Gold with 21 points per game, and 6.5 rebounds. Classmate Marlena Tremba added 19.0 points per game in the victories.

With a win this afternoon, the Tribe will advance to the quarterfinals and have a date with the No. 2-seeded Drexel Dragons tomorrow. Tipoff for that game is set for 5 p.m.
 
MARCH ON TRIBE
The Green and Gold enter the CAA Tournament as the No. 7 seed for the ninth time in program history, which is the Tribe's most frequent seed in the CAA Tournament. As a seven seed, W&M has posted a 2-8 record. The Tribe is looking for its first CAA Tournament victory since the 2009 season. That year, W&M picked up a 63-62.
