ELON, N.C. – Every freshman in the lineup recorded at least two hits as the William & Mary baseball team slugged its way to a 14-7 victory clinching the Colonial Athletic Association series at Elon on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 9-11, 2-1 in league action, while Elon drops to 9-11, 1-2 in CAA play.
All nine starters recorded at least one hit the game as W&M recorded a season-high 18 hits. Six players had multi-hit games, including junior
Ryder Micioni, sophomore
Ryan Hall, and freshman
Kyle Wrighte, who all had three hits. Freshman
Hunter Smith led the team with three RBI, while junior
Charles Ameer and senior
Charley Gould had a pair of RBI.
Elon jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Kory Shumate hit a one-out triple down the right field line, before Kyle Jackson sent a sacrifice fly into foul territory. The run gave the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
The Tribe tied the game with a two-out rally in the top of the second inning. Freshman
Zach Pearson started the rally with a single, moving to third when Wrighte shot a single through the right side of the infield. A stolen base play allowed for Pearson to steal home, tying the game.
W&M tacked on four runs in the top of the third inning. Ameer reached on a leadoff walk, moving to second on a stolen base. Miconi followed with a single through the right side, before Hall walked loading the bases. Gould grounded into a fielder's choice, but it was enough to score Ameer, giving the Tribe its first lead. Cullen Large walked, reloading the bases. A wild pitch allowed for the second run to score, before
Hunter Smith sent a sacrifice fly, and Pearson beat out an infield single extending the lead to 5-1.
The Green and Gold tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Hall led off the inning with a single up the middle. After an out, Large reached on an error put on runners on second and third. A passed ball allowed for Hall to score. The next batter,
Hunter Smith singled up the middle, extending the lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Phoenix closed the gap with two runs. A pair of walks to CJ Young and Jackson set the table for Elon. With two-outs, Nick Zammarelli doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases and cutting the lead to 7-3.
The Phoenix comeback attempt continued with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brett Guba and Austin Leeny led off the inning with back-to-back singles moving up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Young followed with a triple scoring two, before a Shumate groundout cut the score to 7-6.
W&M added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Gould led off the inning by smashing a homerun over the left center field wall. After an out,
Hunter Smith singled, moving to third. Wrighte followed suite with an infield single, moving the score to 9-6.
The College pushed across another run in the top of the eighth inning. Three straight singles from Miconi, Hall, and Gould loaded the bases. After a fielder's choice gunned down a run at the plate.
Hunter Smith grounded out, but an error allowed for Hall to score, making the score 10-6.
Elon scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs, back-to-back walks to Young and Shumate put runners on base. A pair of wild pitches cut the deficit to 10-7.
The Tribe tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth inning, putting the game out of reach. Back-to-back singles from Wrighte and senior
Josh Smith started the rally. The next batter, Ameer doubled clearing the bases. After a walk to Miconi, Hall singled into right field for the third run of the inning. The final run of the game was plated on a double by Large.
Junior
Nick Brown was credited with his second win of the season as he tossed five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He equaled a season-high with six punchouts. Both sophomore
Robert White and senior
Joseph Gaouette were terrific out of the bullpen. White tossed 1.2 innings with four strikeouts, while Gaouette closed the game with 1.1 with two strikeouts, earning his fourth save.
Beaulac took the loss for the Phoenix. He tossed 2.1 innings allowing five runs on three hits. Shumate, Zammarelli, and Guba led the team with two hits, while Young and Zammarelli had two RBI.
The Green and Gold return to Williamsburg and open one of two season-long seven-game homestand on Tuesday, March 22 when they welcome Richmond to Plumeri Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. The stretch is also apart of 12 of 14 games in the friendly confines of Plumeri Park.
