Men's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight, Topping UTSA, 4-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Damon Niquet and sophomore Lars de Boer rallied to clinch the doubles point, and in the process, sparked the 70th-ranked William & Mary men's tennis team to a 4-0 win over reigning Conference USA Champion UTSA on Saturday morning at the Millie West Tennis Facility. Hosting a number of former Green and Gold players, the Tribe (11-3) celebrated its annual Alumni Weekend with its second win in as many days and its fourth-straight overall. The 11-3 start is the best for W&M since 2002.

After the teams split the top two spots, things looked bleak for W&M in doubles as Niquet and de Boer trailed by a break, 5-3, and faced a match point against the UTSA duo of Joao Riquelme and Christian Carrillo at No. 3. The Green and Gold pairing fought off the match point and won three-straight games to surge in front, 6-5. The point-deciding tilt eventually went to a tiebreaker where de Boer and Niquet again trailed 4-3. The tandem, which improved to 2-1, rallied to win the final four points of the tiebreaker and clinch the doubles point.

The Green and Gold's top duo of senior Scott Huang and sophomore Ryan Newman got the home team off to a great start. The duo rolled to a 6-1 win over Diogo Casa and Fabian Brand, who entered the contest at 6-3, and upped its record to 3-2.

In singles, Cargill and Niquet quickly pushed the Tribe lead to 3-0 with matching 6-0, 6-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. Cargill blitzed Casa to pick up his 11th win of the season and improve to 8-5 at the top spot. Niquet bounced Brand for his 10th-straight win. The Tribe junior ran his season ledger to 13-8 overall, including a 10-1 dual-match mark.

de Boer continued his strong play with a match-clinching straight-sets win at No. 4. He won for the eighth time in his last nine matches and fourth straight overall in dispatching of Riquelme, 6-2, 6-2. de Boer improved to 14-7 overall, 10-2 in dual-match play and 6-1 at No. 4.

W&M returns to action when it travels to face a trio of nationally-ranked opponents at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas, March 26-27. The Green and Gold faces No. 8 Texas Tech and No. 38 Rice on Saturday, March 26. The matches carry noon CT and 5 p.m. CT start times, respectively. The Tribe closes out the trip with No. 41 Drake on Sunday, March 27, at noon CT.
