Baseball Ends Up on Wrong Side of a Pitcher's Duel Versus Connecticut

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Connecticut scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, and the William & Mary baseball team found themselves on the wrong side of pitcher's duel, falling to the Huskies 3-2. With the setback the Tribe falls to 6-8, while UConn improves to 8-4.
 
Senior Mitchell Aker turned another strong outing for the Tribe. He pitched seven innings without allowing an earned run. He scattered two hits with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Robert White was charged with the loss allowing a run on two hits, with a strikeout.
 
Senior Charley Gould and sophomore Ryan Hall led the Tribe with two hits. Hall drove in the only run of the game for W&M.
 
The Tribe's first chance to score came in the top of the fifth inning after a two-out rally. With two outs, back-to-back singles from freshman Kyle Wrighte and Hall, followed by a wild pitch put runners on second and third. However, UConn's Tim Cate was able to get the final out with a strikeout persevering the scoreless game.
 
For the second straight inning, W&M put a runner in scoring position, but this time the Tribe pushed across a run. Senior Charley Gould led off the inning with a single, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Cullen Large. After an out, freshman Jason Walman reached on error, which scored Gould and gave the Tribe a 1-0 advantage.
 
Connecticut took advantage of a couple of Tribe errors and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joe DeRoche-Duffin reached on error starting the rally. After an out, Bryan Daniello was hit by a pitch followed by an error that allowed Zac Susi to reach, loading the bases. A fielder's choice allowed for the first run to score, before a stolen base with two allowed for the second run to come across giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
 
The Tribe tied the score with a two-out run in the top of the ninth inning. Senior Josh Smith led off the inning with a single moving to second on stolen base. With two-outs, Hall singled back up the middle tying the score at 2-2.
 
UConn came right back in won the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Daniello led off the inning with a double to right center field, before a fly out allow him to move to third. Troy Stefanski single through the middle winning the game.
 
Randy Polonia got the win for UConn pitching the ninth inning. He allowed a run on one hit in his inning.  Stefanski led the UConn offense going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
The Green and Gold close out their trip to California with a game against Cal State Northridge. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
