Strong Singles Leads Men's Tennis Past Bucknell

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary men's tennis team continued its winning ways at home on Sunday afternoon, using a strong singles effort to down Bucknell, 5-2, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Green and Gold (8-3) won at the top five singles positions in winning its seventh-straight home match of the year over the Bison (5-5).

In doubles, junior Damon Niquet and sophomore Lars de Boer dispatched of Andrei Vitiuc and Max Haase, 6-2, at No. 3. The win was the first for the Tribe pair in their first pairing this season, while Niquet and de Boer are a perfect 2-0 as a duo over the last two years. Unfortunately, Bucknell rallied with narrow wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the initial point of the match.

W&M responded with straight-set wins at the top-five singles spots to take out its Patriot League counterpart. de Boer and junior Aidan Talcott dropped just two games each in victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. de Boer improved to 7-2 in dual-match play with his 11th singles win overall, bouncing Daniel Wright, 6-1, 6-1. Talcott remained perfect in dual-match competition at 10-0 as he rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Bryan Adams. He owns a team-best 14-6 singles record on the year.

Sophomore Alec Miller won his first career match at the top singles position. He upended Nick Bybel, 6-4, 6-2, to push his records to 13-11 overall and 7-4 in duals.

Niquet and senior Scott Huang collected convincing wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, as part of the Tribe's singles dominance. Niquet defeated Vitiuc, who was a Bucknell-best 6-2 in dual-match play, by a score of 6-1, 6-3, for his eighth straight win. He is 11-8 overall on the season. Huang won his third straight, recording a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Ben Gerber. He pushed his ledger to 7-6 on the year.
