Men's Tennis Runs Win Streak to Six with Doubleheader Sweep

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team ran its win streak to six matches with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe (7-2) opened with a 6-1 triumph over Binghamton (4-4), before bouncing Villanova (1-1), 7-0, in the nightcap. Sophomore Christian Cargill and juniors Addison Appleby, Damon Niquet and Aidan Talcott each tallied a pair of singles wins in the doubleheader sweep.
 
After Binghamton won at the first doubles spot during the morning match, the Tribe used its undefeated pairings at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the initial point of the match. Senior Scott Huang and sophomore Alec Miller downed Sid Harzarika and Valentin Bouchet, 6-2, for their third win in as many tries at the second spot. At No. 3, Niquet and Carigll dropped just one game in its third-straight doubles-point clinching victory, 6-1, over Thomas Caputo and Josh Druger.
 
The trio of Cargill, Talcott and Niquet recorded straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to cements the Tribe victory over the Bearcats. Cargill continued his impressive play at No. 1 singles, upending a First Team All-MAC selection in Hazarika, 6-3, 6-2, for the second straight year. Talcott and Niquet remained on a roll with victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Talcott topped Bouchet, 7-5, 6-2, while Niquet earned a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Druger in the clincher.
 
Junior Addison Appleby and sophomore Lars de Boer rallied for three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to round out the Tribe's victory over Binghamton. After dropping the first set, 6-3, to Ludovico Cestarollo, de Boer answered with matching 6-3, 6-3 wins in the second and third for his 10th singles triumph of the year. Appleby took the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), from Caputo, who won the opening set 6-1. The Tribe junior claimed his fifth win of the year with a 10-4 victory in the third-set super tiebreaker.
 
In the nightcap, W&M again won at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles posts, while not dropping a set in singles. In total, the Green and Gold only relinquished 19 total games to the Wildcats in singles. Talcott and de Boer teamed together for the first time in dual-match play and downed Thomas Dodson and Jimmy Purdey, 6-4, at No. 2. Cargill and Niquet won their six straight match, upending William Elmore and Luis Miranda, 6-3, at the third spot.
 
Cargill (No. 1) and Niquet (No. 6) ran their singles win streaks to six matches as well with straight-set wins against Villanova. Cargill ran his record to 7-2 at No. 1 and posted his 10th victory of the year, bettering Seitz, 6-1, 6-4. Niquet dropped dominated Matt Phelps, 6-1, 6-1, dropping just a game in each set game in each set. He improved to 6-1 in dual-match competition.
 
Talcott pushed his unbeaten spring ledger to 8-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alastair Hurry at No. 5. The Tribe junior improved his team-leading singles mark to 12-6 overall. Miller remained tied for the team lead with Talcott, posting his 12th singles victory of the season at No. 2. The Tribe sophomore topped Miranda, 6-2, 6-1, pushing his dual-match mark to 6-3 in the process.
 
At No. 3 and No. 4 singles, Huang and Appleby posted victories. At the third spot, Appleby won for the third time in his last four matches, bouncing Noyes, 6-2, 6-2. Huang saw his first singles action of the day and dropped just one game in a commanding, 6-0, 6-1, triumph over Purdy at No. 4. He moved to 2-0 in dual-match play with his sixth win of the year.  
 
The Tribe hits the road for the first time since the opening weekend, when it travels to No. 47 Penn State on Sunday, Feb. 21. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start time at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.
