WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team put the finishing touches on the best non-conference slate in school history, winning its 10th straight in turning back American Athletic Conference visitor East Carolina, 82-72, on Wednesday night. Marlena Tremba scored a season-high 27 points, including 16 of the Tribe's final 22 in the four quarter, while junior
Abby Rendle posted the second triple-double in school history. With the victory, W&M extended its single-season school-record win streak to 10 games and closed out the best non-conference start in program history at 10-1.
Tremba scored 24 of her game-high 27 in the second half, finishing at 7-of-15 from the floor, 4-of-8 from 3-point range and a career-high tying 9-of-12 at the charity stripe. Rendle tallied 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds and a school-record tying 10 blocked shots. It was Rendle's second career triple-double. Senior
Alexandra Masaquel just missed here third straight double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while junior
Jenna Green scored in double figures for the first time this season with 10 points to go with six assists.
With the game tied at 60 following a Kristen Gaffney free throw at the 6:31 mark, Tremba led the Tribe's closing charge. She knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers, the second of the step-back variety, to give the Green and Gold a 66-62 advantage. After ECU (9-3) pulled within one, Tremba converted back-to-back lay-ups, the final one going back-door off a pass from Green to extend the margin to 70-65 with 3:23 left. Green canned a huge 3-pointer to beat the shot block on the ensuing W&M possession, and Tremba hit six free throws over the final 25 seconds put the game away.
The Green and Gold finished the night shooting 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the floor, including 60 percent (9-of-15) in the decisive fourth quarter. W&M shot 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from 3-point range and hit 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) at the charity stripe. The Tribe held a 39-36 advantage on the glass and blocked 13 shots on the evening, the second most in school history. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs tallied nine points on the evening despite battling foul trouble, and freshman
Victoria Reynolds turned in a nice stat line off the bench with six points, five rebounds and two steals.
ECU shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field and 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) at the charity stripe. Gaffney led the Pirate charge with 26 points on 12-of-21 shooting to go with six rebounds. Bre McDonald was the only other ECU player in double figures with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
The Tribe scored the game's first four points, and then opened up its largest lead behind a 9-0 run. Boggs led the charge during the spurt with seven points. She knocked down a 3-pointer from the right side and added a driving layup to give W&M a 13-5 lead with 3:59 left in the opening period.
ECU responded with a 14-2 spurt over the period's final four minutes. Gaffney scored eight of those 14 points, including six straight to draw the visitors within 13-11 at the 2:11 mark. Khadidja Toure hit a trio of free throws to put the Pirates on top. After a Masaquel jumper briefly tilted the lead back to the Green and Gold, 15-14, ECU scored the period's final five points, including a Fanni Csutoras triple to lead 19-15 at the first intermission.
After Gaffney scored the opening points of the period to extend the ECU run to 16-2 and the lead to 21-15, the Tribe answered with a 10-0 spurt. Junior
Jeanne Gaumont's 3-pointer from the right wing put W&M back on top, 22-21, before three Tremba free throws capped the run and extend the Tribe lead to 25-21 with 6:49 left in the half.
Six ECU points in a row, including a Csutoras jumper, put the visitors back on top, 29-27. Despite a buzzer-beating Masaquel jumper, the Pirates took a 33-32 advantage to the break. It was just the second time this season, the Tribe trailed after the first 20 minutes. ECU shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) from the field compared to just 38.5 percent (10-of-26) for the Green and Gold in the opening 20 minutes. W&M stayed close by connecting on 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
Like the start of the game, W&M scored the first four points of the second half as Rendle and Masaquel put the home team back in front. Tremba scored eight-straight Green and Gold points, including five in a row after ECU pulled even, to give the Tribe a 44-39 lead at the 6:33 mark of the third period. ECU tied the game at 46 on a pair of Toure free throws and the team's traded six-point spurts, before the third quarter ended with the team even at 54-54.
Tremba also continued her assent up the school's scoring chart, climbing from ninth to sixth place in program history. For her career, the senior now has 1,360 points and tonight she passed Angie Evans, Devin James, and Emily Correal. She is 13 points away from claiming fifth place in school history.
The Tribe returns to action when it opens CAA play on the road at Delaware on Monday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m., and the game will be streamed on CAA.TV.
