Men's Basketball Blasts Savannah State on Record-Setting Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For the second-straight game the offensive fireworks were on display at Kaplan Arena as the William & Mary men's basketball team lit up the scoreboard to the tune of a 112-85 victory over Savannah State on Monday night. The Green and Gold (5-4) knocked down a school-record 19 3-pointers, topped the century mark for the second consecutive contest for the first time in W&M history and dished out 30 for just the second time in program annals in rolling past the Tigers (3-9), who were coming off a win at Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Dec. 11.

Senior Omar Prewitt topped the 20-point mark for the fourth time in the last five games, leading six Green and Gold players in double figures with 21, all in the first half. Making his second start in a row, junior Connor Burchfield tallied 19 points on 5-of-11 from 3-point range to go along with a career-high seven assists. Classmate Jack Whitman recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while senior Daniel Dixon scored 16 points, all in the second half. Junior David Cohn notched his third double-digit assist game of his career, handing out 10 of the Tribe's 30 helpers.

The Tribe jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 1:46 of the contest and never trailed. Prewitt scored six of the Tribe's first nine, including a pair of thunderous dunks. Savannah State kept it close, drawing with 20-15 at the 13:05 mark on back-to-back lay-ups from Isaiah Felder and Troyce Manassa.

W&M opened up a double-digit advantage, holding the visitors without a field goal for more than five minutes after they cut the margin to five. A 13-3 run extended the lead to 33-18 and concluding with three-straight 3-pointers from junior Greg Malinowski, Burchfield and Prewitt.

The margin ballooned to as much as 27, 59-32, on back-to-back 3-pointers from Prewitt and freshman Justin Pierce with less than a minute remaining in the opening half. W&M shot 54.3 percent (19-of-35) in the first period, including nine 3-pointers, while limiting Savannah State to 29.7 percent (11-of-37), including just 2-of-21 on 3-point attempts.

The Tribe scored the first five points of the second half, including a 3-pointer from Burchfield just a 1:10 into the frame, to extend the margin to 30, 64-34. SSU used a 10-0 run to draw within 20, 72-52, following a triple from Dexter McClanahan. Dixon responded by scoring 13-straight Green and Gold points to re-establish the 30-point margin. He connected on a trio of 3-pointer during the stretch and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

The W&M advantage reached its highest at 32 on multiple occasions in the second half, including a fast-break Pierce dunk to send the Tribe over the 100-point mark. The margin did not dip below 22 the rest of the way. In total, W&M (10) and SSU (12) combined for 22 second-half 3-pointers.

After scoring 113 points against Milligan on Friday night, the Green and Gold topped the century mark in back-to-back games for the first time in school history. The 112 points against the Tigers rank as the fourth-highest total in program annals. W&M dished out 30 assists on its 36 made field goals, marking the second-highest total in school history. The 30 helpers are the 10th-best total nationally this season. The 19 3-pointers were a W&M record, the third most in CAA history and the fifth-best total nationally in 2016.

The Green and Gold finished the night shooting 51.4 percent (36-of-70) from the floor, including 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from 3-point range. Malinowski tallied 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 from long range, while sophomore Paul Rowley chipped in 10 points. Pierce added seven points, three rebounds and a career-high four assists off the bench.

Savannah State shot 38.7 percent (29-of-75) from the field and canned 14-of-44 (31.8 percent) 3-pointers. McClanahan and Kelly led the Tigers with 17 points apiece, while Joshua Floyd rounded out the double-digit scorers for the visitors with 13. Kelly topped SSU with eight rebounds.
