First Quarter Blitz Leads Women's Basketball to its Eighth Straight Victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary women's basketball team raced out to a commanding lead on the way to its eighth-straight win, downing Mount St. Mary's, 68-46, at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Tribe (8-1) used a dominating first quarter and never looked back. W&M shot a sizzling 73.3-percent in the first 10 minutes and limited the Mount (2-8) to just 2-of-12 with six turnovers in jumping out to the 22-point cushion.

Senior Marlena Tremba led the way for the Green and Gold with 19 points on 7-of-10 from the floor, including a 5-of-8 effort from 3-point range. Fellow classmate Alexandra Masaquel posted her 13th career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with a team-high five assists. She is tied for ninth in W&M history with 13 double-doubles. Junior Abby Rendle turned in a nice stat line of eight points, five rebounds and seven blocked shots. Senior Latrice Hunter added nine points off the bench.

W&M could do little wrong in the opening 10 minutes, using runs of 7-0, 9-0 and a quarter-ending 10-0 spurt sparked by Hunter. The Tribe scored the game's first seven points, and after the Mount got on the board, scored nine straight to increase the margin to 16-2 following a Tremba 3-pointer at the 3:17 mark.

The Tribe ended the period scoring 10 points in the final 1:25, including eight from Hunter. The Green and Gold senior canned back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 20 seconds, including a half-court heave at the buzzer, to give the home team a 26-4 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's scored the first six points to draw within 16 points, but the Tribe responded with a 13-1 run to end any thoughts of a comeback. Masaquel tallied three-straight buckets, before freshman Victoria Reynolds ended the spurt with back-to-back lay-ups, increasing the lead to 41-13.

W&M scored the first seven points of the second half to increase the lead to its largest at 33. Tremba's 3-pointer two minutes into the frame extend the cushion to 48-15.

The Green and Gold finished the contest shooting 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, including a 9-of-22 3-point effort (40.9 percent). The Tribe dished out 20 assists on its 28 made field goals. W&M did a number defensively on the Mount, holding them to just 25.9 percent (14-of-54). The Tribe, which finished with 13 blocked shots and 13 steals, forced MSM into 18 turnovers, converting those into 26 points. The 13 block shots is tied for the second most in school history, while Rendle's seven are tied for the fourth most in school history.

W&M continues its three-game homestand with its second-straight Northeast Conference foe in St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Kaplan Arena and the game will be streamed for FREE in HD on Tribe Athletics TV via Stretch Internet.
