WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary women's basketball team used a balanced attack and suffocating defense to rout in-state rival Richmond, 67-39, on Friday night at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe posted its best defensive field goal percentage since 2009 and limited the Spiders (0-3) to the fewest points for the W&M opponent since 2008. The Green and Gold (1-1) picked up its first win over Richmond in 10 years.

Senior
Marlena Tremba scored a game-high 13 points on 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line to go with six assists. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs added a nice stat line of 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior
Alexandra Masaquel, junior
Abby Rendle and freshman
Victoria Reynolds tallied eight points apiece. Masaquel added a game-high eight rebounds, while Reynolds chipped in six on the glass.
Â
Defensively, the Green and Gold did a number on the Spiders, holding them to just 23.5 percent (12-of-51) from the floor. Even more impressive, Richmond, who dropped a 63-56 at Virginia last week, connected on just 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) and 1-of-16 (6.3 percent) in the first and fourth quarters, respectively. The defensive field goal percentage was the best for a Tribe team since limiting South Alabama to 21.9 percent (14-of-64) in 2009. Richmond's 39 points were the fewest for a Tribe foe since holding Norfolk State to 38 points in 2008.
Â
After Richmond opened the scoring with a 3-pointer just over a minute into the contest, the Tribe surged in front for good thanks to a 14-3 run fueled by its defense. W&M held Richmond without a field goal over the final 8:55 of the first quarter. Boggs and Rendle led the offensive attack with four points apiece. Boggs knocked down four free throws, while Rendle converted two lay-ups.
Â
Richmond scored the first three points of the second to cut the Tribe lead to 14-9, but W&M answered with an 11-0 run to take a double-digit advantage it would never relinquish. Tremba, who scored nine points in the second 10 minutes, canned a 3-pointer in transition to extend the margin to 21-9 and force a Richmond timeout just over two minutes into the quarter. Masaquel book-ended the Tribe run with a jumper and a driving lay-up, the latter giving W&M a 25-9 lead with 5:43 left.
Â
Tremba scored seven of the Tribe's final 11 points of the half, before a sophomore
Jenna Green crossover led to a buzzer-beating lay-up and a 19-point halftime cushion, 37-18. The Tribe defense held the Spiders without a field goal over the final 3:19 of the half and limited UR to just 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from the field overall in the first half. On the other side, W&M connected on 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the floor and an impressive 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
Â
W&M scored six points in the opening 1:24 of the second half on lay-ups from Masaquel, Boggs and Rendle to extend the Tribe lead to 43-18. Richmond would not go quietly though, using a pair of 8-0 runs to draw as close as 13. Micaela Parson sparked the first spurt with six points as her two free throws at the 6:06 mark cut the gap to 43-26. Taisha Murphy hit a pair of 3-pointers, the second with just over a minute left in the third period to draw UR to its closest at 49-36.
Â
It would be as close as the Spiders would get. W&M outscored the visitors, 16-3, in the final 10 minutes. Boggs started the final period surge with a 3-pointer from the right side. Junior
Jeanne Gaumont added all seven of her points in the fourth quarter as the Green and Gold rolled to the 67-39 victory.
Â
W&M finished the game shooting 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor and held a commanding 42-30 advantage on the glass. The Green and Gold connected on 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the free throw line, the eight-best single-game percentage in school history. The Tribe dished out 18 assists on its 26 made field goals and blocked eight shots, including three from Rendle. W&M dominated the paint, outscoring the Spiders, 30-10, down low.
Â
Parson was the only Spider in double figures with 12 points, while Hubbard added eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
Â
The Green and Gold returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 20, with a first of two-straight road games at Old Dominion. W&M travels down I-64 for the 2 p.m. tip-off from the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, Va.
