WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Antonio Bustamante's 89th minute goal sent the William & Mary men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Drexel, and with tonight's results a berth in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament, which starts next weekend. With the win, the Tribe improves to 10-6-2, 3-3-2 in CAA play, while the Dragons drop to 1-13-2, 0-7-0 in league action.
William & Mary dominated the possession and outshot Drexel 12-3 in the first half. However, only three of them came on target for the Tribe. Off of a corner kick, redshirt junior
Riley Spain put a shot on frame in the 21st minute, but it was saved. In the 31st minute, junior
William Eskay had a chance, but again Tyler Afflerbach was there for the stop. The final on target chance came from Spain off of another corner, but the result was the same.
Drexel mustered just three shots in the half with only two on cage. The first came from Armin Efendic in the sixth minute, before Robert Smith cracked one from distance in the 45th minute. Redshirt junior
Phil Breno was there for both stops.
Again the Tribe managed the possession for almost the entirety of the second stanza limiting the Dragons without a shot for the final 45 minutes. W&M fired 16 of their own in the half, but didn't break through until its final chance.
In the 89th minute, Eskay drove the left side of the pitch and raced towards the box and the endline. The junior sent a feed towards the middle of the six to
Antonio Bustamante. The sophomore placed his shot off of the left post, but got the hometown roll. His eighth goal of the season lifted the Tribe to a 1-0 lead and eventual victory.
Afflerbach and the Dragons defense was the story of the first 88 minutes of the night. He stopped 10 shots, before conceding the late winner.
For the evening, the Green and Gold held a 28-3 advantage in shots, which included an 11-2 advantage in shots on-goal. Eskay fired a match-high five shots, while Antonio Bustamnate and sophomore
Ryder Bell each fired four shots apiece.
Breno and the backline combined for the shutout for W&M. The redshirt junior made a pair of saves, both in the first half, for his sixth shutout of the season. As a team, the Tribe has recorded seven shutouts, and has not allowed goal in the last 193 minutes of play.
With the results around the conference on Saturday, the Tribe knows it will get at least one more game in 2016, but because of Hurricane Matthew earlier this year will have to wait until Tuesday night to find out where they are heading.
