The William & Mary field hockey team fell behind early on Friday night against Drexel, but showed the poise of a championship-caliber team in coming back to score two goals unanswered and win the match 2-1 on Homecoming. The Tribe improved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Dragons fell to 6-8 on the year and 1-2 in league play.
Drexel came out firing early and threatened in the fourth minute, but back-to-back saves by senior captain
Maddy Moore (Norfolk, Va.) and freshman goalkeeper
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) kept the Dragons out of the goal. The visitors finally broke through early in the ninth minute with a lofted shot that snuck in just under the crossbar, but then it was the Tribe's turn. W&M outshot Drexel 11-1 over the final 27 minutes in the half, and took four penalty corners to just one for the opponents. The equalizer came in the 28th minute, thanks to junior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) who drove to the side edge of the circle and then found classmate
Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.) in the middle for a shot that tipped up and over the the goalkeeper.
W&M kept the pressure up in the second half, collecting 10 more shots and another penalty corner. In the 57th minute, junior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) drove in on the baseline, and as the defense collapsed, passed through them to find MacLeod who poked the ball in the goal to take the lead with her first multi-goal game of the year. The final 13 minutes saw Connor and the Tribe defense stiffen and deny Drexel time and again, ultimately preserving the win. For the game, the Tribe held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners and 22-9 in shots, while Connor made three saves in goal.
William & Mary finishes its home slate on Sunday, hosting No. 17 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. Before the introductions the Tribe will take a brief minute to honor its five-player senior class.
