Women's Tennis Sweeps Navy in Season Opener

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 46-ranked William & Mary women's tennis team swept the Navy Mids, 7-0, in its season-opener on Friday afternoon. The Green and Gold won all three doubles matches to take the initial point of the match from Navy, which finished last season at 20-7. W&M finished off the sweep with a trio of straight-set singles wins and three more in three sets. Senior Julia Casselbury clinched the team triumph with a win at No. 5.

W&M started things off by winning a trio of close doubles matches. Senior Elizaveta Nemchinov and freshman Lauren Goodman posted their first win together, dispatching of Sam Droop and Catalina Rico, 6-4, at the top spot to give W&M the early lead. Junior Marie Faure and sophomore Maria Groener clinched the doubles point with a matching 6-4 win at the No. 2 position against the Navy duo of Claudia Mackenzie and Carlee Conway. Casselbury and freshman Deepa Dhore rounded out the doubles sweep with a tiebreak win, 7-6 (4), over Audrey Channell and Anastasia Kondrasov at No. 3. The Tribe tandem improved to 2-0 on the year.

Goodman wasted little time increasing the Tribe cushion to 2-0, dropping just three games at the No. 2 position. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native downed Rozel Hernandez, 6-2, 6-1, to improve to 4-1 on the year.

At the top post, Nemchinov, who is ranked No. 91 nationally, bounced Navy's Amanda Keller in straight-sets, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Keller was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection last season after posting a 29-8 mark as a freshman. Nemchinov improved to 7-2 on the year with her 74th career victory.

Casselbury cemented the team victory with a win over another All-Patriot League pick from last season. The Tribe senior downed Logan Antill, 6-3, 6-3, for her 20th career singles triumph. Casselbury improved to 5-2 this season.

Faure, Dhore and Groener each needed three sets, but completed the Tribe sweep with singles victories. Making her Tribe debut, Faure split the opening two sets with Claudia Mackenzie by matching 6-4 scores, before claiming her first Green and Gold win with 6-1 victory in the third.

Dhore and Groener knocked off All-Patriot League selections in Kristine Rojo and Sam Droop, respectively. At No. 6, Dhore rallied from a set deficit to bounced Rojo, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, improving to 4-1 on the year in the process. Groener won the opening set, 6-3, before Droop took the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). The Tribe sophomore outlasted the Navy senior in a third-set super tiebreaker, 15-13, for her fifth win of the season and 25th of her career.

The Tribe continues its season-opening six-match road swing when it travels to No. 47 Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 17. The match-up of top-50 teams is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
