Box ScoreTribe senior
Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) led the team all weekend long in both kills (25) and aces (6), and was rewarded with a spot on the all-tournament team. In Sunday's match, she had seven kills, six digs, and a pair of aces. Classmate
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) hit .409 with 10 kills and eight digs to go with another ace, and freshman
Heather Pippus (Lake Oswego, Ore.) continued to impress with three aces, seven digs, five kills, and a block.
Also of note, sophomore
Sara Zumbach (Franklin, Tenn.) had 18 digs and a kill, while senior
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) added in six kills and a block.
Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) also had six kills and a block, and
Paige Humphrey (Oak Hill, Va.) hit .500 with five kills and a block of her own. Freshman
Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) had a match-high 19 assists and five digs, while
Austyn Ames (Wichita, Kan.) had 12 assists and
Gabrielle Pe (Virginia Beach, Va.) seven helpers.
In the first set, Pippus made a kill early and proceeded to serve out five start points to force an Iona timeout at only 6-3. The Tribe didn't look back from there, repeatedly stringing together four- and five-point runs to pull away to a 25-19 win. The strategy kept working in the second set, with W&M pulling out 17-10 on a kill by Brickerd, and Pippus once again came to serve six-straight Tribe points before Albright and Humphrey put the Gaels to paid, 25-13. The third saw seven-straight points served by Brickerd early, once again forcing an early timeout. Iona battled tough to try and catch up, but Brickerd had the two of the final three kills of the day and closed out the 25-19 win for the match.
William & Mary returns home for a few classes, then hits the road again right away for the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C., on Friday and Saturday Sept. 11-12. The Tribe will take on Western Carolina on Friday afternoon, before facing Hampton and host East Carolina on Saturday.
