Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Katie Johnston netted a pair of goals as the William & Mary women's soccer team blanked N.C. State 3-0 in the final match of the N.C. State Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Classmate Samantha Cordum scored the Green and Gold's other tally. With the victory, the Tribe improves to 4-1-1, while the Wolfpack fall to 3-3.

W&M jumped on the board first with a goal in the 22nd minute. Senior Nicole Baxter sent a loft into the box that found the head of Johnston. Johnston was able to direct the ball past the keeper. The senior's second goal of the season pushed the Tribe to a 1-0 lead.

The Tribe nearly doubled its lead in the 33rd minute. Baxter again found the head of Johnston off of a corner kick. Johnston's shot was saved off the goal line by a Wolfpack defender. The rebound came back into the box, where sophomore Adrienne Maday pushed her shot high.

Right before the break, the Tribe doubled its lead. Sophomore Haley Kent sent a long ball that found Cordum, who was one-on-one with goalkeeper. Cordum flicked the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. Her third goal of the season, gave the Tribe a 2-0 advantage.

N.C. State had a couple of chances seconds apart in the 51st minute. Jackie Stengel put a shot of frame that senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey was able to stop. The rebound stayed in front of the goal and Dayna Tomayko had a shot stopped by the foot of Casey.

The Tribe added its third goal of the day in the 71st minute. Sophomore Elysse Branton rushed down the field and into the box, before dishing off to Johnston. Johnston uncorked a shot into top right corner of the goal. Her second of the match lifted the College to a 3-0 advantage.

W&M held a 14-9 advantage in shots for the match, which included a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Johnston fired a match-high five shots, while Cordum recorded three shots for the Green and Gold.

Casey and sophomore Samantha Johnson combined for the shutout. It was the third time this season that W&M has recorded a shutout. Casey made four stops in the match. With the four saves she moves into fourth place all-time in school history with 243 saves. She is now just four saves away from moving into third place all-time.

The College returns to Williamsburg for a pair of matches at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field next weekend. The Green and Gold hosts Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 11, before welcoming Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 13. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
