Box Score The William & Mary volleyball team showed flashes of brilliance Saturday afternoon against Cornell, but was edged 3-2 in the first game of the Army Invitational. The Tribe moves to 2-3 on the year, while Cornell is 1-0 at the start of their season.
Box ScoreThe Tribe had a remarkable first set, hitting .647 with 11 kills and no errors, and also played very well in the third with a .357 attack and 16 kills, but was unable to break through for the third win. Senior
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) had her best outing of the season so far with 12 kills and three blocks while hitting .500. Classmate
Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) added in nine kills to go with a pair of aces, and sophomore
Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) had nine more kills and four blocks.
Another sophomore,
Paige Humphrey (Oak Hill, Va.) had a match-high seven blocks to go with her seven kills. Redshirt-junior
Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.) added in five kills and an ace, and surpassed 300 digs in her career with ninth today. Senior
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) was another with five kills and an ace, but really shone on defense with four blocks and 18 digs. That lifts her four-year total to 999 digs, and Koleva also surpassed 1,000 points on the day.
Also of note, sophomore
Sara Zumbach (Franklin, Tenn.) had a team-best 20 digs to go with an ace, and junior
Gabrielle Pe (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two more aces and a double-double of 19 assists and 11 digs. Freshman
Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) nearly matched her, serving up an ace and eight digs to go with 21 assists.
William & Mary is back in action this evening, taking on host Army at 7 p.m.
