Box Score The William & Mary volleyball team had to make a quick turnaround from last night's five-set win, but proved more than up to the task Saturday morning as they defeated Hampton, 3-1. The Tribe improved to 5-4 overall, while the Pirates fell to 0-8.
Box ScoreSenior
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) led the way with spectacular play on both sides of the net, hitting 11 kills on a .364 attack and making nine blocks on defense. Classmate
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) added in 12 kills, to go with nine digs, two blocks, and two aces, and freshman
Heather Pippus (Lake Oswego, Ore.) turned in a double-double fo 10 kills and 14 digs to go with three blocks.
Also of note, redshirt-junior
Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.) hit .300 with nine kills and four blocks, and junior
Kristen Larrick (Bethesda, Md.) had another four blocks. Sophomore
Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) had three blocks and four kills, and on defense, classmate
Sara Zumbach (Franklin, Tenn.) had 13 digs and two aces. Freshman
Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) made 28 assists to go with five digs and three aces for the second match in a row, and
Gabrielle Pe (Virginia Beach, Va.) chipped in with 14 assists.
The Tribe started off the match still feeling last night's marathon, it seemed, as the Pirates were able to take the first set 25-20 behind seven blocks. They looked in control in the second as well, going up 18-15 to force a W&M timeout. W&M took great advantage of that chance to regroup, however, reeling off a 6-2 run and taking the lead at 21-20. Hampton gained ties at 21- and 22-all, but a kill by Biniak and two from Pippus finished off a 25-22 Tribe win and tied the match.
The third set was never in much doubt, at least not after a 10-1 opening run for the Tribe, and 9-1 run to finish the set at 25-13. The fourth start tight, but a kill by Koleva broke a 6-6 tie, and started W&M on a 19-4 run to close the set and the match.
William & Mary is back in action tonight at 7 p.m., taking on host East Carolina in the final match of the ECU Invitational.
