W&M Field Hockey Clips Georgetown 3-1 in Season Finale

Story Links

The William & Mary field hockey team brought its season to a successful conclusion Sunday, scoring three unanswered to rally past Georgetown 3-1 on Senior Day.  The Tribe finishes the season at 7-12 overall, while the Hoyas finish at 8-11 on the year.

W&M dominated possession and play, with 33 shots to just eight for Georgetown, but the Hoyas struck first on a bang-bang play in the 16th minute.  Aliyah Graves-Brown manuevered her way to an open look at goal, but senior Peyton Smith (Richmond, Va.) was there to make the defensive save, the first of her career.  The carrom fell to the Hoyas' Sam Hickey, who was able to complete the score to post the visitors to a 1-0 lead.

That lead only lasted 10 minutes, with the Tribe getting on the board in the 26th minute.  Off one of W&M's 11 penalty corners, Smith took a shot that was saved and momentarily trapped under the Georgetown goalkeeper.  Only momentarily, though, as Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.) was there and dug the ball out, passing it over to Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) at the far post for an open shot on goal.  It was the fifth goal of the year for Menges, and the second assist for MacLeod.

Less than a minute later, W&M went ahead for good.  Senior Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) did what she does, taking the ball into the circle at speed and fired a rocket of a shot that cracked the boards on the near side.  That was her 13th goal of the year, and the 38th of her career.  Saunders finishes her illustrious career with 98 points (38 goals, 22 assists), ranked fifth all-time in Tribe history.

MacLeod added an insurance goal after the intermission, scoring in the 46th minute for a 3-1 advantage.  Her first diving shot was saved, but the keeper had to flatten herself to do it.  The rebound came right back to MacLeod, and she scooped the ball up and into the top netting of the goal for her seventh goal of the season.  From there, the Tribe played keep-away, and stymied four Georgetown corners and almost 15 minutes of 10-v-11 action after two yellow cards in the final 20 minutes.  Senior Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) came up big in her final match, making four saves on the day.
