Senior Katie Johnston's Golden Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Versus College of Charleston

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –  Senior Katie Johnston scored the golden goal in the 95th minute, as the William & Mary women's soccer team defeated the College of Charleston 1-0 in overtime on Friday night. With the win, the Tribe improves to 8-3-1, 2-1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Cougars drop to 8-6-0, 1-2-1 in league action.

Charleston had a pair of chance in the first half, but neither wound up on target. In the 10th minute, Raymara Barreto had a shot blocked. Later in the half, Jessica Schifer pushed a header towards goal, but it rolled slowly off of the post and out of play.

The Green and Gold fired five first half shots, but only put one shot on target. In the 31st minute, senior Barbara Platenberg put a shot on frame, but Lauren Killian turned it away.

W&M controlled the pace of play from the second half and into the overtime period. Starting right out of the gates, senior Samantha Cordum took a shot that sailed high, right before sophomore Sami Grasso had a chance saved by Genevieve Henderson.

The Tribe continued to mount its attack and had pair of shots on-goal about five minutes apart. The first came on a rocket from sophomore Haley Kent, before Platenberg headed a shot on target, but both plays ended in saves for Henderson.

Schifer put two shots on target in the second half. In the 47th minute, she fired from distance on a shot that was turned away by senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey, before another shot in the 78th minute was solved by Casey.

W&M put a pair of shots on target in the final four minutes of regulation. The first came in the 86th minute when Grasso put a shot on frame from the top of the box, but Henderson made the save. The final chance came from Platenberg, but her 89th minute shot was also saved.

Just five minutes into the overtime period, W&M found the game-winner. Sophomore Rachel Moore drove to the edge of the goalline just on the outside of the box. She sent a cross to the center of the 18. Waiting for it, was Johnston who fired her shot into the right corner of the goal. Her fifth goal of the season lifted W&M to a 1-0 victory.

The Green and Gold dominated the shot count taking a 15-5 advantage in the category. That mark also included a 7-2 lead in shots on-goal. Johnston led the Tribe with a game-high four shots, while Platenberg and Cordum each fired three shots.

Casey made two saves on the night and continued her assent up the Tribe record book. Her now 273 career saves place her 16 away from second place all-time. She also picked up her sixth shutout of the season, which moves her into fifth place all-time in that category.

The College concludes its home regular schedule on Sunday when they welcome UNCW to Williamsburg on Sunday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The Tribe will honor its nine seniors following the match.
