Dessi Koleva Sets Career Mark in Five-Set Thriller

Box Score The William & Mary volleyball team and James Madison put on an incredible show Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena, a thrilling five-set barnburner that ended with a JMU win a 3-2.  The Tribe moves to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in the CAA, while the Dukes improved to 14-3 and 4-0 in league play.

There were numerous bright spots for the Tribe, despite the loss, and none brighter than senior Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.).  She led all players with 20 digs, and also had 17 kills on the night to break into incredibly rare territory.  Koleva's 16th kill of day not only tied the fifth set at 8-8, but also made her just the third player in school history with 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs, alongside Hall of Famers Heidi Erpelding '89 and Jennifer Torns '92.

Also of note, fellow senior Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) recovered from a slow start to come ever closer to a major milestone of her own.  Albright started the day with four errors in six attempts and no kills, but finished 8-0-17 after that point and with a match-high six blocks.  She is now just 18 blocks from 400 in her career, a mark only three other players have ever reached.  Sophomore Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) hit .387 with 15 kills, five digs, three blocks, and an ace.

Redshirt-junior Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.) had seven kills and seven digs on the afternoon to go with two blocks, and freshman Heather Pippus (Lake Oswego, Ore.) also had two blocks to go with an ace, four kills, and five digs.  Classmate Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) had 24 assists and six digs, and Gabrielle Pe (Virginia Beach, Va.) dished out 19 assists with seven digs and an ace of her own.  Senior Olivia Jebb (Cornwall, N.Y.) made the start at libero, and had 15 digs with four assists.

The first set saw 14 ties and five lead changes, and the Dukes in front by two midway through the set at 14-12.  A kill by junior Kristen Larrick (Bethesda, Md.) got the Tribe going, however, and how -- an 8-2 run that eclipsed both JMU timeouts.  The Dukes battled back to tie the match at 20-20, but Biniak responded with a kill out of a timeout, and Pe's service ace gave W&M match-point at 24-22 and Larrick finished things off with another kill.

After JMU took the second set 25-15, W&M rallied right back in the third.  A kill by Koleva ignited a 9-2 run early, and another (her fifth of the set) began a 7-2 run late that clinched a 25-15 win for the Green and Gold.  Again the Dukes responded with a win, tying the match 2-2 and sending the teams to a fifth-set tiebreak.  W&M scored the first four points on Pippus' serve, including two blocks in the first two point, before JMU evenutally tied at 7-7 and took the lead for good at 8-7.  Koleva's milestone kill tied things again at 8-8, but the Tribe was unable to get closer than one the rest of the way before running out of time at 15-12.

William & Mary continues its homestand next weekend, with three home matches over Fall Break.  The Tribe hosts UNCW and College of Charleston on Friday and Saturday nights, both at 7 p.m., and then takes on Delaware in a rare Monday afternoon match-up at 2 p.m.
