Women's Soccer Earns Share of CAA Regular Season Title With 2-0 Win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals as they beat Elon 2-0 on Tuesday night on the road. Senior Nicole Baxter and sophomore Rachel Moore scored for the Tribe. With the win, W&M secured a share of the CAA regular season title with Hofstra. The Tribe improved to 13-3-2, 7-1-1 in league action, while Elon concludes the regular season at 9-8-2, 1-7-1 in CAA play.

The match was a makeup game, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 2. It was postponed due to Hurricane Joaquin and the wet field conditions.

Despite controlling the possession for almost the entire half, W&M fired the only three shots in the first period. Junior Kady Kriner fired the first shot of the night in the 37th minute that had to be stopped by Elon goalie Taylor Mohr. In the 40th minute sophomore Haley Kent pushed a shot wide, before Moore also missed wide right before the break.

Elon fired its first shot in the 47th minute. Kendall Ballotti fired a shot from distance, but senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey corralled the rolling shot and ended the Phoenix attack.

W&M missed its second chance to score a goal when sophomore Sami Grasso put a shot on frame in the 63rd minute. Mohr, who had to dive to get there, saved Grasso's shot.

The Tribe took the lead on a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Grasso charged into left side the box and beat an Elon defender, who then pushed down Grasso which earned the PK. Baxter stepped to the penalty spot and fired the chance into the back of the net. Her second goal of the season, both on PK's, gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

W&M went on to add an exclamation point with a goal in the 89th minute of the match. Moore broke down the left side of the field and right by the Phoenix defense. In the box, she fired her shot into the right corner of the goal. Her fourth goal of the season gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead.

The College controlled the match from the start and ended the night with a 13-4 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in shots on goal.  Moore led the Tribe with four shots, while Baxter and Kent each recorded three shots on the night.

Casey was credited with a pair of saves in her ninth shutout of the season, which moves her into a tie for fifth in single-season school history. It was also her 27th career shutout, which ties her for third in career shutouts. The senior continued to distance her second place mark in career saves, and now has 290 career saves. She sits 37 saves away from first place.

The Tribe earns a share of the CAA regular season, which is the team's first regular season title since 2012, will be the No. 2 seed in the 2015 CAA Championship at Hofstra. W&M will take on the winner of No. 3 UNCW and No. 6 Delaware. Stay tuned to TribeAthletics.com for complete coverage of the 2015 CAA Championship.
