TOWSON, Md. – The William & Mary women's soccer team scored three times in the first half, and hung on for a 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory at Towson on Friday afternoon. Freshman
Mackenzie Kober and sophomores
Sami Grasso and
Rachel Moore scored for the Green and Gold. With the win, W&M wins its sixth straight contest and improves to 12-3-1, 6-1-0 in CAA play, while the Tigers fall to 6-8-4, 0-6-2 in league action.
After Moore had the first shot of the match blocked, Kober made the Tribe's second shot count. Kober took a pass from sophomore
Haley Kent on the left side of the box and dribbled around a defender before firing a shot into the back of the net. Her third goal of the season, and second in as many games gave W&M a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers found the equalizer just five minutes later. McKenzie McCaull was able to fire a shot, while being taken down by a W&M defender. The ball took a weird hop over the head of the goalkeeper, and into the back of the net tying the score.
Towson continued its pressure looking for the second goal, and had a strong chance in the 11th minute. Marissa Green put a shot on target, but senior goalkeeper
Caroline Casey was there for the stop.
W&M retook the lead in the 13th minute on Grasso's fifth goal of the season. Senior
Nicole Baxter sent a feed to Grasso, who was 13-yards out, and fired a chip shot into the back of the net. The marker gave W&M a 2-1 lead.
The Tribe nearly missed a chance to take a two-goal advantage on a pair of shots in the 26th and 27th minutes. Senior
Meghan Musgrove fired a shot that was blocked by a Towson defender out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Kent sent a good ball into the box that Kober got her foot to, but Towson goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao stopped her shot.
W&M scored its third goal of the day right before the break in the 45th minute. Junior
Haley Kavanaugh sent a cross at the top of the box that found Moore. Moore uncorked her shot into the right side of the net. The sophomore's third goal of the year pushed the lead to 3-1 Tribe.
The Tigers continued to claw away at the Tribe lead and cut the deficit by a goal in the 62nd minute. Hollie Garber created a turnover, and dribbled the ball to 15-yards out and launched a shot into the back of the net. Her second goal of the season cut the W&M advantage to 3-2.
W&M continued to push the issue, and fired a pair of shots in the 64th and 65th minute. Off of a corner kick sent in by Baxter, Moore had her shot blocked. Moments later, senior
Katie Johnston was able to send a header to the mouth of the goal that was saved by Sebolao.
Towson continued to fight for the equalizer and put a shot on-goal in the 70th minute. Erin Kelly put a shot target, but again Casey was able to make the stop to preserve the lead. In the 77th minute, Natalia Pickney was able to put a shot on frame that ended in the same result, a Casey save.
The Tribe finished the match with a 20-6 advantage in shots, which included a 9-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Moore led the Tribe with six shots, while Baxter finished the day with three shots.
Casey recorded three saves for the Green and Gold. The senior continued inching closer to second place all-time in career saves, with 286 saves. She needs one save to tie for second, and two saves to take over sole possession.
The Green and Gold continue its road trip with two more matches to close out the regular season. W&M travels to James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 25, before heading to Elon on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Kickoffs are set for 1 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively.
