Men's Tennis Splits Saturday Doubleheader

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team split a Saturday doubleheader, falling in a tight match-up with Brown, before downing Morgan State at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. W&M dropped a 5-2 decision to Brown in a tilt decided by a quartet of three-setters, while the Green and Gold swept Morgan State, 7-0, to end the day. The Tribe moved to 6-3 on the year with the doubleheader split.

The Tribe doubles team of senior Will Juggins and freshman Christian Cargill went a perfect 2-0 at the top spot to run its win streak to eight matches. In singles competition, Cargill and fellow classmate Lars de Boer both picked up a pair wins on the day.

Against Brown, Juggins and Cargill won convincingly, 6-1, at the top spot over Justin To and Gregory Garcia. The Bears rallied to claim the initial point of the match with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 posts.

Each team picked up a straight-sets victory in singles as Brown extended its lead to 2-1. Cargill tallied the Tribe win, dispatching of To, 7-5, 6-3, at the top position, while the Bears countered with a triumph at No. 5.

The balance of the match came down to four three-set matches at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6. de Boer rallied for a win at the No. 4 slot. After dropping the first set to Peter Tarwid, 6-0, the Tribe rookie rallied to take the second, 6-1. The players battled to a third-set tiebreaker with de Boer coming out on top, 7-6 (4). Brown though countered with three-set victories at the other three spots to secure the victory in their season opener.

In the nightcap against Morgan State, W&M swept doubles to take the early lead. Cargill and Juggins improved to 5-0 at the No. 1 post with a 6-4 win over Treajh Ferguson and Duk Young-Park. The Tribe posted 6-2 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Addison Appleby and senior Aaron Chaffee paired together for the first time this season and defeated the Bear duo of Felix Andre and Sagar Sathyanarayanan, 6-2, at No. 2. The rookie pair of de Boer and Alec Miller downed Lucas Krinsinski and Erick Ward, 6-2, at No. 3 to improve to 2-1 on the year.

W&M won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Cargill won his third straight match, upending Young-Duk, 6-3, 6-3, at the top spot. He improved to 12-9 overall and 5-3 at No. 1.

At No. 2, de Boer ran his win streak to six, but like his morning match, needed to rally from a set deficit. Ward took the opening set, 6-4, but de Boer bounced back to take the second, 6-2. The Tribe freshman won the third-set super breaker, 10-6, to improve to 12-8 overall and an impressive 7-1 in dual-match play.

Appleby picked up his eighth win of the year and fourth in dual-match play, upending Ferguson, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 3 post, while junior Scott Huang won at No. 4, 6-2, 7-5, over Krinsinski. Huang ran his win streak to four, improving to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in dual-match play.
