WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team swept Morgan State, 7-0, on Friday night at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Green and Gold claimed the doubles point and then won all six singles matches without dropping a set to down the Bears. W&M upped its season ledger to 2-1, while Morgan State fell to 0-2.
The Tribe won the doubles point for the second-straight match using the same combination in the process. The freshman pairing of
Olivia Thaler and
Maria Groener remained perfect in dual-match competition with an unblemished 6-0 victory over Riana Roberts and Jasmine Edwards at the No. 3 position. The Green and Gold duo upped their mark to 3-0 at No. 3 and 5-3 overall.
Senior
Jeltje Loomans and junior
Leeza Nemchinov clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1. The Tribe pair improved to 8-2 with a 6-3 triumph over the Bears' Chelsi Russell and Danielle Thompson.
In singles, freshman
Cecily Wuenscher quickly pushed the Tribe lead to 2-0, dropping just one game in a win at the No. 5 post. She bounced Edwards, 6-1, 6-0, to improve to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in dual-match play.
Loomans (No. 1), sophomore
Mélanie Roy (No. 2) and Groener (No. 4) all dropped just two games in claiming straight set wins. Loomans picked up her first victory at the top singles spot this season and upped her singles record at 9-3 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Russell.
Groener clinched the team win with a matching 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Kayla Price at the No. 4 slot. It was her seventh straight victory, pushing her season ledger to 10-4. Groener is the only Tribe player at 3-0 in dual-match competition.
Roy dropped two games in the first set, but still rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cierra Plummer. Roy won her fifth match of the year and improved to 2-1 in duals. The victory at No. 2 also marked the highest win in the lineup for Roy during her young Tribe career.
Thaler and junior
Julia Casselbury rounded out the Tribe sweep with wins at No. 3 and No. 6. Appearing in the dual-match singles lineup for the first time this season, Casselbury dropped only three games in a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Roberts. It was her third win of the year. Thaler defeated Thompson, 6-3, 7-6 (6), to push her season mark to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in dual-match play.
W&M closes out its season-opening four-match homestand when it welcomes Big Ten foe Penn State to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 25. The match carries at 1 p.m. start time. The Nittany Lions, who are 0-1 on the year after a season-opening 4-3 loss to Tulane, will travel to ODU on Saturday, before facing the Tribe.
