Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Setback at No. 13 Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The William and Mary men's soccer team dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to No. 13 Georgetown in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 2-5-0, while the Hoyas improve to 4-1-3.

"We are disappointed not to have gotten something out of this game," head coach Chris Norris said. "We fought hard and executed our plan pretty well against a Georgetown team that I believe is a national contender. If we don't allow our current frustrations to get the better of us, and play with the same determination with which we did today, I'm confident our fortunes will turn."

For the sixth time in seven matches William and Mary fired the first shot of the game. Today, junior Jackson Eskay fired a shot wide of the frame in the sixth minute. The Tribe had a couple of chances to get on the board early in the match. Senior Chris Albiston pushed a shot wide in the 17th minute, and Jackson Eskay put one on frame, but it was stopped in the 31st minute.

Georgetown tallied the match's lone goal in the 34th minute. Josh Turnley sent a long ball that found the foot of Alex Muyl. Muyl one-timed the ball to Arun Basuljevic. Basuljevic brought the ball down and fired the goal from the top of the box.  The tally gave the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.

The Tribe opened the second half on the attack, much like the first half. Jackson Eskay sent a header shot wide of the cage in the 48th minute, before sophomore Reilly Maw pushed a shot just high, moments later.

W&M's final chance in the game came on a shot in the 75th minute. Albiston had some space and rocketed a shot towards cage. However, a Hoya defender stepped in front of it, stopping any further damage.

GU looked for its second goal of the day and had a chance in the 78th minute. Keegan Rosenberry put a shot on target, but senior goalkeeper Bennett Jones was there for the save.

Jones finished the match with three saves. The match was played fairly evenly in every facet, with the Hoyas holding a slight 8-7 advantage in shots. Georgetown also held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Jackson Eskay fired a game-high three shots for the Tribe, including one on target.

The Green and Gold continues its two-game road trip when it travels to nationally ranked UMBC on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. W&M returns to Martin Family Stadium when it opens conference play against UNCW on Saturday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is also set for 7 p.m.
