WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William and Mary senior placekicker
John Carpenter has been recognized by the Fred Mitchell Award for his excellence on the field and in the community during the month of October. It marks the second consecutive month that Carpenter has garnered the honor.
Carpenter was one of 29 placekickers to earn the distinction in October, as the Fred Mitchell Award winner will be announced in mid-December based on performance on the football field and in the community.
After earning all-conference honors last fall, Carpenter has established himself as one of the nation's elite placekickers during the 2014 campaign. The Cumberland, Md., native currently ranks fourth nationally in made field goals per game (1.7) and leads the Colonial Athletic Association in field goal percentage (80.0). Additionally, he ranks second in the conference in scoring among kickers (7.4).
Highlighting his efforts this season was a career-long 49 field goal in the win against Lafayette, while he was chosen as the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in season opener at Virginia Tech.
One of the most outstanding placekickers in school history, Carpenter currently ranks tied for sixth in career made field goals (30) at W&M.
An exceptional student, Carpenter is pursuing bachelor's degrees in religious studies and philosophy and has been selected to the CAA Academic All-Conference Team twice (2012, 2013). Additionally, he is a member of the Dean's List, garnered the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award multiple times and is a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award nominee. He has also volunteered with Team Apple, HOPE (Health Outreach Peer Education) and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
