In addition to rising as high as No. 16 in the national rankings this fall, the Tribe posted the second-best turnaround in school history despite playing the nation's 14th-touhgest schedule (based on opponent winning percentage). W&M's seven wins marked a five-game improvement from last season and included three victories against top-20 teams.

The Tribe boasted one of the nation's top defensive units in 2013, as it ranked second in the country in scoring defense (14.0) and eighth in total defense (305.5). Additionally, W&M was one of the nation's least penalized teams and ranked third in fewest penalty yards per game (32.2) and fifth in fewest penalties per game (4.1).

This year's honor marks the fourth time Laycock has garnered the award, as he previously earned the distinction in 2009, 2001 and 1986.
