Men's Tennis Wins Season-Opening Doubleheader

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - For the seventh straight season, the William and Mary men's tennis team opened the dual-match campaign with a doubleheader sweep at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Tuesday. The Tribe picked up a pair of 5-2 victories over in-state foe Norfolk State and Campbell. Seniors Ben Hoogland and John Banks led the way for the Tribe with two singles and two doubles wins each, while freshman Damon Niquet recorded two singles triumphs.

In the first match of the day against Norfolk State, the Tribe claimed the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshman Addison Appleby and senior Ben Guthrie notched their second victory as a team, downing NSU's Igor Braga and Robin Riethmueller, 6-2, at the second post, while Banks and Hoogland upended Samuel Lemberger and Daniel Grauel, 6-3, at No. 3.

Niquet and Banks quickly pushed the Tribe lead to 3-0 with convincing victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions. In his first collegiate dual-match, Niquet bounced Peter Ramstromer-Pello, 6-0, 6-2, while Banks dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Samuel Lemberger at the fifth spot.

Junior Aaron Chaffee won in straight sets at the No. 3 singles position. He defeated the Spartans' Igor Braga, the 2012 MEAC Rookie of the Year, 6-5 (4), 6-2, for his sixth win of the season

At the top singles post, Hoogland downed First-Team All-MEAC choice Dzmitry Zyhmantovich in three sets. The Tribe senior won the opening set, 6-1, before the Norfolk State player rallied with a 6-2 triumph in the second. Hoogland won his 60th career singles match with a 6-4 victory in the decisive third set.

Against Campbell, Banks and Hoogland won for the third time in their last four matches, downing Fernando Guillen and Rik van Gerwen, 6-3, at the No. 3 doubles position. The win upped the senior pairs' record to 9-8. Chaffee and junior Will Juggins claimed their first win of the season at the No. 1 post as the Tribe took the doubles point. The tandem bounced Marthinus Visser and Jean-Marc Krone, 6-4.

Hoogland continued his winning ways at the top spot, downing Fernando Guillen, 6-1, 6-4, for his fourth straight victory. Guillen was the Big South Player of the Year last season and was ranked as high as No. 70 nationally. Hoogland won for the fifth time in his last six games and picked up his sixth triumph of the year.

Fellow classmate Ben Guthrie gave the Tribe a pair of wins at the top two singles positions, winning in straight sets. The Green and Gold senior defeated Campbell's Steven Billington, 6-4, 6-0, to improve to 5-2 on the year.

Like they did earlier in the day, Niquet and Banks rounded out the Tribe victory with singles wins toward the bottom of the lineup. Niquet won his third straight, upending Dominik Kaniewski, 6-0, 6-4, to improve to a team-best 9-6. Banks needed three sets, but outlasted Jean-Marc Krone, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, for his sixth win of the season.

The Tribe returns to action when it travels to the Midwest for a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents this weekend. W&M travels to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 29 Notre Dame on Friday, Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m. The Green and Gold continues its road trip in Evanston, Ill., at No. 32 Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m.
