The William and Mary volleyball team took a set off of ACC-foe Wake Forest Saturday afternoon in California, falling by a 3-1 score in the third of four matches at the Fullerton Invitational. The Tribe is now 1-5 on the year, while the Demon Deacons improved to 5-0 after losing just their second set all year.
Box ScoreThe Tribe had three players score a dozen or more kills, led by
Michelle Heath's (Rustburg, Va.) double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore
Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) and junior
Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) each had 12 kills and two blocks, Brickerd while hitting .300.
Sophomore
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) continued to dominate at the net, adding seven more blocks to her weekend which now includes 16 in just 11 sets of action. Her teammate in the middle,
Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.), matched Albright with five kills while also contributing two aces and a pair of blocks. Also of note, freshman
Paige Lucas (Asheboro, N.C.) had a strong outing of 44 assists, 11 digs, and four blocks, and redshirt-junior
Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.) had a match-best 24 digs.
The Tribe pushed the Deacons hard from the get-go, forcing extra points in the first set before falling 26-24, and nearly doing the same in the second before a 25-23 final. Coming out of the intermission, Albright and Brown combined for a block and W&M was off and running. With the score tied 17-17 late, Brickerd pounded down a kill, the first of a 7-1 run that saw the Tribe win 25-18. Brickerd had five of her kills and both blocks in the winning effort, while four of Albright's blocks came in the set. Wake Forest returned the favor in the fourth set, however, winning 25-18 to take the match 3-1.
W&M has one more match this weekend, taking on Kent State beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern (4 p.m. on the West Coast).
