The William and Mary volleyball team scored an impressive first-set victory on the road at Virginia Saturday, before ultimately being edged 3-1 in the match.  The Tribe is now 4-10 overall, while the Cavaliers improved to 7-5 overall.

Leading the way for W&M was sophomore Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.), who had 10 kills, three blocks, and a pair of service aces.  Classmate Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) had six kills on a .385 attack, and added four more blocks to be named to the All-Tournament team.  Also impressive in the middle was redshirt-junior Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.), who hit .429 with eight kills and a pair of blocks.

Also of note, junior Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) had nine kills on the evening, and sophomore Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) paired seven kills and nine digs with two more blocks.  Freshman Paige Lucas (Asheboro, N.C.) returned to form with 36 assists, eight digs, and a block.  Rounding out the outstanding individual performances was redshirt-junior Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.), who led the Tribe with 13 digs.

In the first set, W&M led by as many as three late, at 19-16, before Virginia rallied to tie the set at 20-20.  That tie occasioned a time-out, and coming out of the brief break kills by Brickerd and two from Albright in the next four points put the Tribe back in front, 23-21.  The Cavaliers once again came back, tying the set at 23-all and again at 24-all, before serving the ball into the net to give the Tribe a second set point.  The home team took a timeout, but to no avail as Stanciauskas closed out the win 26-24.

William and Mary is back in action on Tuesday night, traveling down the road to take on Hampton at 7 p.m.
