No. 21 Men's Soccer Falls in Hard Fought Road Match at Delaware, 3-1

NEWARK, Del. – The No. 21 William and Mary men's soccer team lost a hard fought, 3-1, match on the road against Delaware on Wednesday night.

William and Mary, which lost for the first time in four matches, falls to 8-4-1, 3-2-0 in the CAA, while the Blue Hens improve to 12-4-0, 3-3-0.

Delaware jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 11th minute. Jamie Martinez sent a quick pass to Roberto Gimenez. Gimenez then found Vincent Mediate, who fired a shot from nine yards out and scored.

The Blue Hens doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. Martinez intercepted a pass and dribbled down the right side of the field. As he approached the box, Martinez fired a shot across the frame and into the left corner of the goal.  The tally put Delaware up 2-0.

William and Mary fought back and found a goal before the intermission. In the 34th minute of off a free kick, redshirt senior Chris Perez took the shot and scored. The goal, which was the third of the season for Perez, cut the lead to 2-1.

Delaware added its third goal of the night in the 53rd minute. Guillermo Delgado sent a cross into the box that Gimenz was able to bring down. His touch found Mark Garriity, who scored into the right side of the net. The goal gave the Blue Hens a 3-1 advantage.

After the goal, the Tribe picked up its attack. In the 57th minute, Perez had another free kick opportunity that was saved by Delaware goalkeeper Borja Barbero.  Off of a corner kick in the 75th minute, junior Chris Albiston sent a header that sailed just high of the crossbar and out of play. The Tribe continued to mount pressure, but were unable to find the back of the net. Through the remainder of the match, the Green and Gold outshot the Blue Hens, 5-3.

For the night, the Blue Hens held a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Tribe returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they travel to UNCW for another CAA contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
