DURHAM, N.C. - After opening the season with a pair of victories, the William and Mary women's tennis team fell at No. 3 Duke, 7-0, on Saturday evening. The Green and Gold fell to 2-1 on the year, while the Blue Devils won their season opener.

Duke opened the match by taking the double points with wins at the top two positions. The Blue Devil team of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfeld upset the No. 3-ranked Tribe doubles team of juniors Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans, 8-1, at the top post, while Marianne Jodoin and Annie Mulholland downed the W&M duo of senior Anik Cepeda and freshman Leeza Nemchinov, 8-2, at the No. 2 position.  

The Blue Devils clinched their season-opening win with straight-set victories at all six singles positions. Duke's No. 10-ranked Hanna Mar clinched the victory for Duke with a straight set win over Belaya at the top singles post.

Nemchinov battled No. 40-ranked Ester Goldfeld at the No. 3 singles slot. The Tribe rookie led 5-4 in the opening set, before her nationally ranked foe rallied with three straight games to take the set. Goldfeld outlasted the Green and Gold rookie, 6-4, in the second set to round out the Duke win.

The Tribe returns to action when it hosts No. 18-ranked Mississippi on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The match carries a 6 p.m. start time at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Fans can follow the match via live stats at TribeAthletics.com.
