WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary women's soccer team opened Colonial Athletic Association play
by defeating James Madison, 2-0, Sunday afternoon from Martin Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field. Sophomore Emory Camper and freshman Nicole Baxter lifted the Tribe past the Dukes with goals in
the second-half. The College improves to
7-3 overall and 1-0 in CAA play, while JMU falls to 3-7 on the year and 1-1 in
league action.
In the opening 45-minutes of play, freshman keeper Caroline
Casey registered three saves in keeping the Dukes off the scoreboard. The Chesapeake, Va., native came up with
another highlight reel save in the 31st minute.
The athletic Casey elevated to her right, thwarting away a high bending
attempt from JMU sophomore Shannon Rano, who fired on frame from 15-yards away. For the half, JMU registered nine shots,
while its defense held the Tribe shot less.
After not connecting on a single shot attempt in the
first-half, the Tribe stormed out of the locker room, reeling off 10
unanswered shots to start the second stanza. On W&M's 10th attempt, junior Dani Rutter
slotted a pass along the PK spot to Camper, who proceeded to punch home the
Tribe's first score of the contest off her left foot in the 72nd minute. The College put the affair out of reach when
freshman Nicole Baxter headed in a lob pass from classmate Leci Irvin, who sent
the assist up in the air from just outside of the 18.
For the match, W&M registered 13 shots with six coming
on frame. All of the College's attempts
culminated in second-half action. The
Dukes finished the afternoon tallying 15 shots, which included six on goal. The Tribe owned the edge in corner kicks, 8-5.
Camper's goal in the 72nd minute was the Virginia Beach,
Va., natives second of the season, while the assist was Rutter's second of the
year. Baxter's score in the 84th minute
was her third of the season, while the assist was the second of Irvin's career. Sunday's victory moved the Tribe to 12-0-1 in
CAA home openers since 2000.
