The top-seeded William and Mary women's tennis team cruised
into the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals with a 4-0 blanking of No. 9
seed Drexel on Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Green
and Gold claimed the doubles point with convincing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3
spots, before sophomores Marlen Mesgarzadeh
and Anik Cepeda
as well as junior
Katie Kargl
put the wraps on the quarterfinal match with singles triumphs. The Green and
Gold won for the seventh time in the last eight matches, including its fifth
straight, to improve to 14-8 on the season.
Senior Lauren Sabacinski
and freshman Jeltje Loomans
, who
earned Second-Team All-CAA honors on Thursday, gave the College the early
advantage in pairs competition with their ninth straight victory. The Tribe
tandem improved to an impressive 10-1 on the year with an 8-2 victory over Alex
Bell and Gozde Unkaya at the No. 3 spot.
Mesgarzadeh and Kargl clinched the doubles point with their
third straight victory at the No. 2 post. The Third-Team All-CAA pair blanked
Elise Leizerovich and Emma Brook, 8-0, to improve to 6-5 on the season.
For the ninth time in her last 10 matches, Mesgarzadeh
claimed a singles victory to extend the Tribe margin to 2-0. The First-Team
All-CAA player tallied her fifth straight win in cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win
over Sonja Stosic at the No. 2 singles slot. Mesgarzadeh improved to 12-9
overall and an impressive 7-1 at the No. 2 position.
Kargl did not drop a game in rolling to her 14th singles win of the year. The Trbie junior dominated Brook, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. Cepeda, who earned Second-Team
All-CAA singles honors, clinched the College's victory with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Zeynep Mafa at the No. 3 post. She improved her team-leading singles mark
to 24-13 in winning for the ninth time in her last 10 matches.
With the victory, the Tribe advances to the CAA semifinals
where it will meet No. 4-seeded and No. 74-ranked UNC Wilmington on Saturday, April 23, at
10 a.m. The Seahawks won their quarterfinal match, 4-0, over No. 5-seeded Old
Dominion on Friday morning. The CAA Championships are being held at the
Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va. The CAA title match is slated for a 10 a.m. start on Sunday, April 23.
