Taysha Pye Leads Five in Double-Figures as W&M Downs Georgia State, 76-66

The William and Mary women's basketball team dominated the free throw line Sunday afternoon against Georgia State, hitting 22 of 23 attempts to seal up a 76-66 win over the Panthers.  At 95.7%, the Tribe's shooting at the stripe broke the school record of 94.7% (18-19) set against East Carolina on Feb. 1, 1984.

Tribe junior Taysha Pye (Bronx, N.Y.) shook off her recent doldrums in a big way, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds and four assists to lead five players in double-figures.  Pye's afternoon included a record-tying 10-10 performance from the free throw line, tying both the school and Kaplan Arena records for best free throw percentage in a game.  Her shooting was the best mark for W&M since Kyra Kaylor '07 also hit 10-10 at Old Dominion on March 11, 2004.

Also reaching double-digits for the Tribe ws freshman Kaitlyn Mathieu (Waterboro, Maine), who nearly had a double-double of 14 points and nine rebounds.  Sophomore Taylor Hilton (Washington, D.C.) also had 14 points, adding six rebounds and two assists.  Captain Katherine DeHenzel (Bowie, Md.) shot 3-4 from deep and finished with 11 points and three assists, while sophomore Emily Correal (Venetia, Pa.) finished out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and three steals.  Senior Katy Oblinger (Altoona, Pa.) also turned in a solid afternoon, dishing out four assists to go with her seven points.

It was an exceptionally tightly played game throughout, with 16 lead changes and five ties.  Indeed, after W&M had taken a 6-0 lead in the first 2:23, neither team would be able to get clear by more than four points again until late in the second half.  Ten of the lead changes happened in the first half alone, which was highlighted for W&M by the play of Pye (11 points) and Hilton (10 points).  In addition to that early run, the Tribe had another 6-0 run later to change a three-point deficit into a three-point lead at 23-20 with 5:11 remaining.  Mathieu scored five of her seven first-half points in the final two minutes, acing a jumper and a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions to help give the College a 35-33 lead at the break.

The close play continued to start the second half, until Correal swung a lay-up up and in to put W&M on top for good at 49-48 with 11:54 to go.  That score kicked off a 17-4 barrage by the Green and Gold that broke the game wide open over the next seven minutes.  The sophomore would score a total of seven points in the run, including an original three-point play that finished things off with the Tribe ahead 64-52 with 4:47 remaining.  Pye also had seven points in the streak with a three-point play of her own, while Mathieu knocked down one of her two three-pointers in the game.  The Panthers tried to claw their way back into the contest and got within five on a triple from the wing with 2:58 remaining, but DeHenzel splashed her third three-pointer of the afternoon 30 seconds later to stem the bleeding and get her team back on track.  Fittingly as the season winds down, it was the senior Oblinger who provided the capping points, a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left.

William and Mary begins the stretch run of the season Thursday night at 7 p.m., traveling to Norfolk to take on Old Dominion.  The game marks the 91st anniversary of women's basketball at the College, taking place on the same day as the very first game (Feb. 24, 1920).
