WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the No.
17-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs on Wednesday night at Martin Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field. With the loss, the
Tribe falls to 7-5 on the season and to 4-2 in the CAA, while ODU improves to
8-2 on the year and to 4-1 in league action.
After a pretty balanced first 25 minutes of the match, the
Monarchs struck out of nowhere on a shot from distance. After a tackle in the midfield, the ball
landed on the foot of ODU's Tim Hopkinson.
Hopkinson dribbled to his left and cracked a shot from 20 yards, beating
the W&M keeper to the upper left corner.
Hopkinson's fifth goal of the season gave Old Dominion a 1-0 lead they
would take in to the half.
At the break, ODU was out shooting William and Mary, 9-2,
with the Monarchs getting two shots on goal to none for the Tribe. Taking the shots for the Tribe in the first
45 minutes were junior captain Ben Anderson and sophomore Roshan Patel.
After the halftime break, the Monarchs were able to score a
quick goal off the foot of Alex Vaughn, pushing its lead to 2-0 over the
College. In the 60th minute, ODU got
another goal, this time off the head off Yannick Smith. With just over 30 minutes left to play, the
Tribe found itself down, 3-0.
The College's offense attempted to close the gap in the 68th
minute, but a one-handed save kept the Tribe off the board. On the attack, sophomore John Ciampa fired a
shot only to see it get blocked. The
carom found the foot of classmate Ben Coffey, but his attempt at goal was saved
on a one-handed, dive from the ODU goalie, keeping the margin 3-0.
For the match, Ciampa led the College with two shots on
goal, while freshman Marcus Luster had the other. In total, ODU out shot the Tribe, 13-8, but
shots on goal were even at 4-4. Of note,
William and Mary was called for 10 offsides while Old Dominion got flagged on
four occasions.
The William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team will return to
action on Saturday, October 15 when the College will head to Richmond to play
CAA rival VCU. Kickoff is scheduled for
