Erin Skipper's Seven Aces Lead Tribe to 3-0 Win over North Carolina A&T

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The William and Mary volleyball team closed out its weekend at the Charlotte 49er Invitational by putting on a serving clinic, and sweeping North Carolina A&T 3-0. With the win, the Tribe improves to 4-5 on the year, while the Aggies fall to 1-8.

Box Score

The effort was led by senior Erin Skipper (Yorktown, Va.), who shattered her previous high with seven aces in the match. It is tied for the second-most ever by a Tribe player in a three-set match, and tied for fourth-most in any match. Skipper also had five kills and four digs. Junior blocker Anne Dorff (Kent, Ohio) was named to the all-tournament team, after posting five kills and a block to cap off her weekend.

Sophomore Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) also had a career-high in aces, scoring three, and added a match-high 10 kills. Freshman Alexandra Ciaccio (Houston, Texas) had a pair of aces and five kills, and sophomore Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) added a 13th ace for the Tribe, in addition to 23 assists. W&M's 13 total aces is the 15th-most in school history, and tied for 11th-most in a three-set match.

At the start, it looked like the Tribe was still suffering from its earlier loss, as the Aggies rattled off a 7-0 run en route to a 10-2 lead. After a quick timeout to calm the nerves, W&M buckled down and immediately rolled to a 16-2 run to seize control. O'Connell started the run with a pair of emphatic kills, and Skipper rolled off three aces to get things well and truly under way. Up 22-14, Dorff put down a kill from Krull, and a pair of N.C. A&T errors closed the set in W&M's favor.

The second set didn't have any extended runs like the first set did, but instead the Tribe was simply workman-like in constantly rolling up four- to five- point rallies between the Aggies' points. Lindsay Kresch (Moon Tonwship, Pa.) had three kills on the set, as did O'Connell, while Ciaccio hit two kills on three attempts and had both of her aces in the 25-11 win.

The third set stayed tight up to 9-9 before a kill by Skipper from Cassie Crumal (Castle Rock, Colo.) ignited a 5-0 run, that included two more kills from Ciaccio and a pair of aces from Skipper. North Carolina A&T closed the gap down to two, at 15-13, before an Aggie serving error sent W&M off onto a 9-0 run that included all three aces by O'Connell. Now up 24-14, N.C. A&T was able to muster one more point, before Kresch and Dorff blocked an attempt by Jeana Daniels to secure the final point, and the match.

William and Mary returns to action next weekend, traveling to Philadelphia to take part in the Villanova Wildcat Classic.
