CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The William and Mary volleyball team fought every set down to the end and put up an outstanding 13 blocks, but was unable to overcome Charlotte Friday night on their home court, falling 3-0. The Tribe moves to 3-4 on the year, while Charlotte improves to 5-3.

Box Score

The stellar defensive effort was led by senior Ginny Bray (Cary, N.C.), who accounted for seven blocks along with five blocks. Juniors Lindsay Kresch (Moon Township, Pa.) and Anne Dorff (Kent, Ohio) had five blocks each, and sophomore Gina Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) had 12 digs, two blocks, and three kills. Kresch added seven kills, while Dorff had four kills and no errors on 10 attempts.

Also of note, sophomore Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 assists and five digs. Freshman libero Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) had seven digs, and senior Erin Skipper (Yorktown, Va.) had two aces, two blocks, three digs, and three kills with no errors.

The Tribe opened the first set strong, going up 13-10 on an ace by senior Cassie Crumal (Castle Rock, Colo.). After Charlotte retook the lead, going up by as much as two at 19-17, W&M answered right back with three straight points on kills from Kresch and Dorff, and an ace from Skipper. From there, the two teams went point for point up to a tie at 23-23, before Charlotte was able to close the set with two kills and take advantage of the Tribe miscue to win the point, 25-23.

In the second set, it was Charlotte's turn to go up early, taking a 15-9 lead, but the Tribe would respond. The Green and Gold picked up seven of the next 10 points to cut the lead to two at 18-16, and a 6-1 run shortly thereafter to take the lead at 22-21. Kresch had another kill and a hand in two blocks during the second run. After the match tied up at 23-23 again, Charlotte again closed out the set with two points to take a 2-0 lead.

Coming out of the intermission, neither team was able to gain a decisive advantage until a kill by Dorff tied the match at 10-10 and sparked the Tribe to a 4-0 run. Bray had a hand in two blocks, pairing with freshman Julia Swalchick (Melbourne, Fla.) on the first and Kresch on the second. Charlotte came back and led, 17-16, but another 5-1 run by W&M gave the Tribe a 21-18 cushion. Dorff had two blocks in the run, pairing with Skipper on the first before making a solo stop for the second. Charlotte scored the next four before W&M tied the match at 22-22, but for the third set in a row, Charlotte was able to close out the victory.

The Tribe is back in action tomorrow, facing Alabama A&M at 10 a.m., before taking on North Carolina A&T at 4:30 p.m.
