Tribe Women's Soccer Ends Season with a 2-1 Victory over Old Dominion

Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team ended its season on a high note Saturday night, defeating the Old Dominion Monarchs, 2-1, on Senior Night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. With the win, the Tribe ends the year with a record of 10-7-2 overall with a mark of 6-4-1 in the CAA. The Monarchs end the year with a mark of 4-12-1 including a conference record of 2-9.

Sophomore Mallory Schaffer capped off her stellar sophomore season with two goals, ending the season with a team-best 10 scores. Tallying assists on the night were junior Diana Weigel and freshmen Audrey Barry and Lauren Gough. In goal, senior Grace Barnard made four saves in her final match for the Green and Gold.

The Monarchs got the board first via a set piece in the 21st minute. After a handball was whistled on the Tribe at the top of the 18-yard box, Ashley Kukura rolled the free kick to Rachael Carroll on the right side. Carroll rifled shot on frame that caught a deflection and found the right side of the net. It was Carroll's first goal of the season.

The Tribe responded with a marker 12 minutes later as Schaffer scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. After having a couple of dangerous looks saved by the ODU goalkeeper in the preceded minutes, Schaffer finally found the first-half equalizer, heading home a cross from freshman Audrey Berry. The service came from the right side and Schaffer won a free header, finding the back of the net from six yards out. The assist was Berry's team-leading seventh of the season.

The Tribe held an 11-7 advantage in shots in the first half, including a 4-3 cushion in attempts on frame. Schaffer led the Tribe with four shots, including three on goal, while senior goalkeeper Grace Barnard made two saves in the opening frame.

In the second half, the Tribe continued to take shot after shot, but were unable to get an early score in the second half. In the second frame, the College out shot the Monarchs, 16-9.

In the 71st minute, it looked as though the College was going to notch a goal and take the lead, only to see two opportunities miss by inches. With the ball on the left wing, Weigel fired a shot from 30 yards out. As the ball headed to goal, it knuckled in the wind, beating the ODU keeper, only to clang off the crossbar back into play. Senior Brittany Lane controlled the rebound and shot on goal, only to see the Monarch keeper make a diving save, punching the ball clear.

Finally, in the 80th minute, the Tribe found the game-winning goal it had been searching for. On the attack, Gough swung a pass to the left wing, finding an open Weigel. Weigel sent a great cross in, finding Schaffer on the far right post. Schaffer finished well with her head, burying the ball in the back of the net for her second score of the match. Schaffer's header gave the Tribe a 2-1 lead with under 10 minutes left.

In the final 10 minutes, the Monarchs would only be able to get off one shot that sailed harmlessly high and the Tribe would go on to win the match, 2-1.

For the match, William and Mary would take a season-high 27 shots, getting 10 of those on goal. The Monarchs took 16 shots on the evening, getting five on frame. Sophomore Cortlyn Bristol and Schaffer led the College with six shots apiece in the match.

With the win, the Tribe ends the season with a record of 10-7-2. The winning record is the 29th straight for William and Mary, a NCAA record. The 2010 season also marked the fifth-consecutive year that the Tribe ended the campaign with 10 or more wins.
