PHILADELPHIA, PA - The
National Soccer Coaches Association of America has selected 1984 William and Mary graduate
Jon Stewart as the recipient of the organization's Honorary All-American Award for 2005. Stewart will be presented with the award on January 21 in Philadelphia at the NSCAA All-America Luncheon, held in conjunction with the annual NSCAA Convention.
The host, executive producer and writer of Comedy Central's seven-time Emmy Award winning "
The Daily Show," Stewart was a member of the W&M men's soccer team for three seasons (1981-83). He compiled 32 points on 10 goals and 12 assists during his career. As a senior, he scored the Tribe's only goal in a 1-0 win over Connecticut, which helped W&M win the ECAC title and make the school's second appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Stewart returned to campus in May of 2004 to deliver W&M's Commencement address, the first Tribe soccer player ever to be selected for that honor.
Stewart began his professional career at some of the top comedy clubs in New York City, eventually earning appearances on "Late Show with David Letterman" and HBO's "Young Comedians Special." That led to hosting "The Jon Stewart Show" on MTV in 1994 and 1995. From there, he starred on "The Larry Sanders Show" before taking over "The Daily Show" in January of 1999. Stewart wrote the best-selling
Naked Pictures of Famous People and starred in a number of feature films, including
Death to Smoochy and
Big Daddy.
"The Daily Show" has won seven Emmy Awards, including the 2003, 2004 and 2005 awards for outstanding variety, music or comedy series. Last March, Stewart signed a deal to extend his contract to host "The Daily Show" through 2008. Earlier this month, he was announced as the host of the 2006 Academy Awards telecast this March.
