Kathy Newberry is one of those rare individuals who proved equally worthy of induction both as an athlete and as a coach, mentoring W&M from 2005-10 after graduating in 2000. During her time wearing the Tribe uniform, Newberry was the first four-time All-Region runner in school history in cross country, and also earned four All-CAA awards while leading W&M to three conference titles. In 1998, she finished 43rd at the NCAA Championships to lead W&M to a best-ever 10th-place finish. She also led W&M to the 1999 CAA title in track and field, the first in school history, and swept the 3,000m and 5,000m CAA titles as a senior in 2000. She contined running post-graduation, qualifying for three-straight U.S. Olympic Trials from 2004-12. She ran both the 5,000m and 10,000m in 2004, the 10,000m in 2008, and the marathon in 2012. Newberry was a veteran presence on Team USA, making the international team seven times. She was a five-time runner at the World Cross Country Championships, captaining Team USA in 2009, and also made the World Track Championships marathon in 2011 and the NACAC Cross Country Championships that year as well. Newberry was named to the CAA 25th Anniversary Women's Cross Country team in 2009-10.
In 2005, Newberry returned to W&M as the head women's cross country coach. Her teams won the CAA cross country championships all five years, and qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2005, placing 23rd in the nation. Her athletes also played a major part of the Tribe's five CAA Track and Field Championships over that period. In total, Newberry's athletes won three Athletes of the Year, three Rookies of the Year, and a total of 34 CAA individual championships. The Tribe also shined in the classroom, with four earning induction into Phi Beta Kappa, five winning CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and a total of eight USTFCCCA Team Academic awards. Newberry herself was named CAA Coach of the Year seven times, three in cross country and four in track and field.
